Our History
Sharyn Volk started working in the Goulburn Valley in 2016 as the founder of a project aiming to improve educational outcomes and aspirations among rural teens through engagement in object-based learning. As part of this initiative she elaborated a lesson plan focusing on her own field of Egyptology to encourage students to think about how we observe, categorise and communicate what we see.
After spending years sharing her own research with the students she was keen to discover from them what they felt passionate about so invited them to tell stories about their own lives through their own objects. As a result of this, the Year 9s at participant schools developed the Goulburn Valley in a Box and this box inspired an international collaborative project.
